אנו שמחים לבשר על קיום האירוע החודשי הבא של אגודת המתרגמים בחיפה.

חניה: קצת מערבית מהמלון, מגרש חניה חופשית במרחק 2-3 דקות הליכה מהמלון.
האירוע הפעם ילבש אופי שונה מהרגיל.
אנו נארח את הסופר א.ב. יהושע ואת מר סטוארט שופמן, אחד ממתרגמיו לאנגלית.
אברהם ב. יהושע (המוכר בשם א. ב. יהושע), סופר, מחבר מסות ומחזאי, הוא אחד היוצרים המיטיבים לבטא את ההוויה הישראלית של ימינו אלה.
נולד בירושלים בשנת 1936, דור חמישי למשפחה ספרדית ירושלמית. לאחר השלמת לימודיו בספרות עברית ופילוסופיה באוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים, החל בעבודתו החינוכית, כמורה בתיכון שליד האוניברסיטה. מאז 1972 הוא מלמד ספרות עברית והשוואתית באוניברסיטת חיפה, בה הוא מכהן כפרופסור מן המניין. הוא כיהן כסופר אורח באוניברסיטת אוקספורד (1975-1976), וכמרצה אורח באוניברסיטאות הרווארד (1977), שיקאגו (1988, 1977, 2000), סטנפורד (1990), ופרינסטון (1992), וכן בפריז וברומא.
יהושע היה ממבשרי המודרניזם בספרות ובתרבות הישראלית. יצירתו כוללת רומנים, סיפורים קצרים, מחזות ומסות, ותורגמה ל- 28 שפות. מיצירותיו הידועות: המאהב, גירושים מאוחרים, מולכו, מר מאני, השיבה מהודו, מסע אל תום האלף, הכלה המשחררת, שליחותו של הממונה על משאבי אנוש, ואש ידידותית.
כמו כן פירסם א.ב. יהושע ספרי מסות בענייני חברה וספרות. הידועים שבהם : בזכות הנורמאליות (1980), כוחה הנורא של אשמה קטנה (1994), וכן אחיזת מולדת ב-2008.
עבודתו של א.ב. יהושע זיכתה אותו בכמה מהפרסים הספרותיים היוקרתיים ביותר בארץ ובחו"ל, ומרבית יצירותיו עובדו לתיאטרון ולקולנוע.
יהושע נשוי לרבקה, פסיכולוגית ופסיכו-אנליטיקאית קלינית. לבני הזוג יש בת, שני בנים, וששה נכדים.
תוכן האירוע, במילותיו של א.ב. יהושע:
אני אדבר קצת על המגע עם העולם הגדול דרך תרגום יצירותי. על שאלה של חילופי השמות של הספרים. קצת אנקדוטות על מר מאני ועל יצירות אחרות, ככל שיעלה המזלג. ביחד עם סטוארט נקריא קטעים בעברית ובאנגלית, והוא ידבר על בעיות אמיתיות יותר של עבודת התרגום.
סטוארט שופמן הוא יליד ניו יורק, ולמד היסטוריה באוניברסיטאות הרוורד וְיֵיל. שימש ככתב בעיתון TIME וכתסריטאי בהוליווד לפני עלייתו לישראל ב-1988. לימד תסריטאות באוניברסיטת תל-אביב ובבי"ס סם שפיגל בירושלים. מאז 1990 עובד כבעל-טור ומבקר ספרים בעיתונות היהודית בלשון האנגלית, בארץ ובחו"ל. הוא משמש גם עמית מחקר במכון שלום הרטמן לחקר היהדות בת זמננו בירושלים.
תרגם לאנגלית את ספרו אש ידידותית של א.ב. יהושע, וגם את חסד ספרדי, שייצא לאור באנגלית בשנה הקרובה. גם תרגם לאנגלית את דבש אריות של דויד גרוסמן, ואת ראשית, מאת מאיר שלו.

We are pleased to announce that the forthcoming monthly ITA event will take place in Haifa.
When: Tuesday, March 27, 2012, 5:00-8:00 p.m.
Where: The Dan Carmel Hotel, 85-87 Ha'Nassi Blvd, Haifa.
Parking: A little to the west of the hotel, there is a free parking lot within 2-3 minutes walk to the hotel.
This event will take on a different format than usual.
We shall host the author A.B. Yehoshua and Mr. Stuart Schoffman, one of his translators into English.
Avraham B. Yehoshua (who is known as A.B. Yehoshua), author, essayist, and playwright, is one of the most eloquent interpreters of the modern Israeli experience.
Born in Jerusalem in 1936, a fifth generation of a Jerusamite Sephardi family. Upon majoring in Hebrew literature and philosophy in the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, he served as a teacher in the high school attached to the University. As of 1972, he is a professor of Hebrew and comparative literature in Haifa University. He has been a guest lecturer in Oxford University (1975-1976), and in Harvard (1977), Chicago (1977, 1988, 2000), Stanford (1990), and Princeton (1992). In addition, he has lectured in Paris and Rome.
Yehoshua is one of the first modernists in Israeli literature and culture. His works encompass novels, short stories, plays, and essays, and have been translated into 28 languages. Among his best known works: The Lover, A Late Divorce, Molcho, Mr. Mani, The Return from India, Voyage to the End of the Millennium, The Librating Bride, The Mission of the Human Resources Man, and Friendly Fire.
In addition, A.B. Yehoshua has published essays that deal with society and literature, among them: For Normality (1980), The Terrible Power of a Minor Guilt (1994), and Homeland Grasp (2008).
A.B. Yehoshua's work has won him several of the most prestigious literary prizes in Israel and abroad. Most of his works have been adapted for the theater and cinema.
A.B. Yehoshua is married to Rivka, a clinical psychologist. The have a daughter, two sons, and six grandchildren.
The content of this event, in A.B. Yehoshua's own words:
I shall speak a little about the contact with the outside world by way of the translations of my works. I shall address the question of changing the titles of my books, and recount some anecdotes about Mr.Mani and other works, as much as memory wil serve. Stuart and I plan to read some excerpts in Hebrew and English, and he will speak about the more serious aspects of translating my books.
Stuart Schoffman was born in New York, and majored in history from Harvard and Yale Universities. He was a journalist for TIME Magazine and a script writer in Hollywood before he made Aliyah to Israel in 1988. He has taught script writing in Tel Aviv University and the Sam Spiegel School in Jerusalem. Since 1990 he is a regular columnist and book reviewer in the Jewish English newspapers in Israel and abroad. In addition, he is an associate researcher at the Shalom Hartman Institute for modern Jewish studies in Jerusalem.
He has translated A.B. Yehoshua's Friendly Fire into English, and his Spanish Kindness that is to published in the course of this year. He has also translated into English David Grossman's Lion's Honey, and Meir Shalev's In the Beginning.
